School Committee Sets Superintendent Salary Range

School Committee · Meeting of October 22, 2026

Middleborough School Committee set a $205,000 to $220,000 salary range for its next permanent superintendent and hired a new finance director. Members voted unanimously to appoint Mark Freeman, currently Martha's Vineyard's school finance director, to a three-year contract as Middleborough's Director of Finance, with a late-November or early-December start date. The committee also approved an eleven-member superintendent screening committee and search criteria softened from "required" to "preferred" for prior central-office experience, after a member argued the stricter standard could exclude strong internal candidates.

Budget Subcommittee lead Christopher Benson warned the district faces "a very difficult budget season" under the state's Chapter 70 formula. The committee separately rewrote its public-participation policy, setting a 45-minute public comment period; resident Bridget called the rewrite "a really big shift" and said it "really addresses a lot of the community's concerns."
