Committee Opens Hearing on Grade Reconfiguration
Middleborough teachers and parents pack a three-hour hearing to oppose a fast-tracked elementary reconfiguration.
School Committee · Meeting of March 4, 2026
Middleborough teachers and parents pack a three-hour hearing to oppose a fast-tracked elementary reconfiguration. The plan would move grades one and two into the MKG building and grades three through five into HBB, consolidate special education coordinators from five to four, and raise average class sizes from 19 to 21 or 22 students. Educators including Donna Germano, co-president of the Middleborough Education Association, and longtime staff members Lisa Duvall and Lisa McDonald said the September 2026 timeline is too rushed, especially without a permanent superintendent or special education director in place.
Committee member Alan said the proposal would not save enough jobs to justify moving quickly. Separately, the committee heard a pitch from MASC field director Sean Costello to run its superintendent search for a flat $11,500 fee. No votes were taken on either item; both return March 12.
