Middleborough School Committee approved a $52.4 million fiscal 2027 budget and voted to drop school choice.
School Committee · Meeting of April 30, 2026
Middleborough School Committee approved a $52.4 million fiscal 2027 budget and voted to drop school choice. The 5-0 vote, with member Sean Mokeler abstaining, funds a $47,185,008 local education budget and anticipates cutting 21.5 positions, 11.5 of them already vacant, leaving up to six teaching jobs at risk. First grade teacher Alexis Burrows told the committee "this is real time effects of budget cuts" that would leave 30 struggling readers without small-group support.
The committee also voted 6-0 to withdraw from school choice for 2026-27 and voted unanimously to hire a one-year interim superintendent rather than rush a search, after a survey found roughly two-thirds of parents, staff and students preferred that option. A $400,000 reading curriculum purchase was trimmed to $150,000 for grades K-5, pending a vote expected May 14.
