Middleborough School Committee Picks Four Finalists for Interim Superintendent

MIDDLEBOROUGH — May 28, 2026 — Middleborough School Committee votes unanimously to interview four finalists for interim superintendent on June 3. The committee, meeting in special session May 28, narrowed a field of nine applicants — an unusually large pool for a one-week-open interim search — to Eric Chaffee, Tracy Curly, David Cutler, and David Thompson, with all four selection votes passing unanimously. Sean Costello, field director for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees, cautioned the board that selecting any retired superintendent would require a critical shortage waiver from DESE that is not guaranteed and precludes the candidate from later serving as permanent superintendent. A resident employee spoke during public comment, holding a duct-taped radio as a symbol of the district's strained infrastructure and warning that "morale is shaky at best" with multiple upper-level administrative positions still vacant. Interviews will be held publicly at Nichols Middle School media room beginning at 5:40 p.m., with the committee expected to vote on a hire the same night.
